The north central and western counties had an ice storm considered "the worst in 80 years." Up to 4 inches of snow in the mountains and this changed to freezing rain late on Christmas Day. Many power lines were down, trees damaged and there were many car accidents. Four deaths and 11 injured in the automobile accidents caused by icy roads. Watauga, Ashe, Avery, and Alleghany Counties were hit hardest.
